We recently completed a combination project for clients in Shawnee. This combination space consists of a second-story sunroom, a lower-level screened porch and a large deck. We will be profiling the deck and porch in upcoming posts. In this post, we are describing the second-story sunroom.

When we initially met with these clients they had an old cedar deck that was about 10 ft. up in the air. They wanted to replace it with a 4-season room that sat directly off the kitchen. Because they wanted to use the room all year, we fully insulated the room and used double pane low-e argon glass windows. We added a separate wall-mounted heating and cooling system so it can be temperature controlled separate from their house.

The new 4-season room attaches to the house directly off their kitchen. We had to rework the house wall to remove the siding and re-trim the wall to match the other walls of the room. The room has a gable roof that compliments the existing rooflines of their house.

The vaulted ceiling is finished with tongue and groove cedar. For the flooring, the clients chose hardwood to compliment the hardwood they have in the house. With a 4-season room, water doesn’t naturally enter the room so interior materials can be used.

From this room, the family can move directly to the Ipe tropical hardwood deck and a lower screened porch underneath the room which we look forward to posting about soon.
